A Brief History of Light Therapy
Since the time of ancient Greece, light has long been known to have healing properties. The Greeks called it "heliotherapy" which employed sunlight. Part of it's success may be attributable to to skin's production of vitamin D. Of course, sunlight also has some very damaging components in the UV end of the spectrum, so it's success was limited.

In the late 19th century, a Danish Physician, Dr. Niels Finsen, researched and demonstrated the beneficial effects of various wavelengths in the treatment of tuberculosis and other ailments. This same technology has since proven to be effective in the fields of dermatology, neurology and physiotherapy. Dr. Finsen was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1903 for his pioneering work.

In the 1960’s in Europe it was noted that certain single wavelengths had a very therapeutic effect on tissues through a process called photo-stimulation. One example is the continued practice of “light-treating” babies for jaundice, a common condition of newborns.

Lasers and LEDs

Their high power-density and focused energy generates heat that damages sensitive skin tissue — it's the primary mechanism of the laser which evokes a healing response in the skin.
